We are making a philosophical shift in our showroom to allow people strolling through to be able to see the real differences between the various levels of home furnishings, especially upholstery. Over the years there has been a consistent worry from many of our potential clients in that they are uncomfortable with the notion of buying a sofa without ever sitting on it. Our assumption is that if you are working with a quality designer who knows her products and deals with quality manufacturers, you will always be pleased with the comfort level of your new room. If you’ve ever had a suit custom made, it was sewn for you from measurements of the tailor and your choice of a fabric swatch…without ever trying it on. A custom suit is always perfect.

But, since not all consumers have the ability to trust a designer (Lord knows not all of them can be trusted!) we are going to have a little more show and little less tell in the studio. Over here is a solidly made sofa but no ability to select your wood finish, cushion cores, or add any extra trim like contrast welting or fringe, and over there is a sofa that can be completely customized. You will pay more for it, but at least now you will easily be able to see and feel why and make your decision. Sometimes the basic sofa is perfect for a client’s situation, but without the ability to see the difference some clients just get stuck on price rather than satisfying their needs.

These photos show just two of the new sofa frames that we now have on our floor. We’re really happy to have them because not only do they look great but the price points are very attractive, AND they are made in the USA with laminated hardwood frames-not plywood or pressboard. We have the sharp skirtless sofa on the floor in a sage faux suede with four fun pillows priced under a thousand bucks. The leather sofa is priced at $1299 and the same frame can come with a lot of leather choices under 2K. We consider ourselves leather snobs and it’s hard to have a custom sofa with quality leather made for under four grand. This one has no frills, but it provides a lot of look and is very comfortable at an amazing price point. We have it as shown in a softy chocolate leather. Nice!

Every so often we have a request for a sailing ship to be placed in an office as an accessory. What could be more masculine? Up until now, we have not really had a good source for quality ship models. In about a week we will have a few on our showroom floor that I am really excited to show. They were each handmade by John Hebeisen, a master woodworker from the Pacific Northwest, who runs a private shop on the banks of the Columbia River. The detailing is exceptional, the hulls and decking are steamed and hand planked for example, with each ship requiring from 100 to 270 hours to build!

We just got a new recliner for our showroom floor. Now the husbands dragged into the store can find sanctuary amidst all the fabric. We place a lot of furniture in homes with a good plan, a photo, a fabric swatch, and a finish sample, but a recliner is a different animal. I think I read a statistic that men spend 20% of their life in a recliner (just kidding I think…eight hours at work, two hours eating, one in the bathroom, two commuting…I’ll bet I’m close), so it has to have a test drive first. That decision is personal. This chair is a bright red eye catcher (red leather is a lot more popular than you might think!) and the new leather smells so good. The line is McNeely Champion and I really like them for a couple of reasons. For its kind of quality, the price is right, and the guy making the frames has been doing it for forty years. That’s commitment! They can also do some pretty cool things with leather. I saw one on their floor in High Point that had hair hide on the outside and a really distressed leather on the inside. Very cool.
